TIME is ticking down to Okehampton Carnival day, on Saturday, October 18. The carnival day fun kicks off with a coffee morning in the Charter Hall from 9.30am to noon. From 1.15pm the hall will be full of bright and colourful costumes for the judging of the all day collectors and the children's fancy dress competition. The crowning of the carnival prince and princess Ryley Cleave and Tegan Griffiths will take place at School Way shortly after 3pm, with the children's procession starting at 3.15pm. From School Way, the procession will turn up Market Street, then left onto Fore Street and East Street before turning back down East Street at its junction with Mill Road. The procession will then lead back to Market Street, dispersing there. The judging of the tableaux and walking entries starts at 6pm, and then the main carnival procession begins at 7.15pm. Led by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the procession starts in Mill Road, going through George Street, Fore Street, East Street, Crediton Road, Limehayes Road, Exeter Road, back through East Street and Fore Street before dispersing at George Street. Road closures will be in place for the afternoon procession from around 3pm to 4pm, with the evening road closures from 5pm to around 9pm. Roads affected by the closures are Mill Road, St James' Street, Park Row, Kempley Road, Station Road, George Street, Fore Street, East Street, Barton Road, Crediton Road, Limehayes Road and Exeter Road. Entry forms for the afternoon and evening classes are available from Beanfeast in the Arcade, or Karen Penna at 19 Wonnacotts Road. Anyone wishing to have a trade stand in the town from 4pm onwards must contact Sally on 07821 049538. Those not booked in will be moved on. The carnival committee have also organised some events in the lead up to the big carnival day. On Saturday, October 11, Okehampton Conservative Club will host a retro disco from 8pm. Admission costs £2. On Tuesday, October 14 the White Hart Hotel hosts a quiz night for teams of four at 8pm. Entry costs £6 per team. Throughout the week from October 13 to October 18, children can take part in a treasure hunt around the town. Entry forms are available from the Beanfeast.
