OKEHAMPTON fire officers are planning to flex their biceps for charity. The officers will be taking part in a 24-hour rowing event from Friday March 9 until Saturday March 10. The public is invited to visit the station to see them in action at the rowing machine on the Saturday, between 11am and 4pm. Fire chief Ian Donovan said: 'There'll be about sixteen of us doing the rowing in half-hour shifts, but by the Saturday afternoon we'll all be feeling pretty tired. 'Some of the men here are really fit, but it's hard work doing long stretches of time on a rowing machine. I'll be taking a cushion.' Besides the spectacle of pumping firemen, there will be an eductational exhibit about fire safety and a chance to look around the station. The money raised from this year's sponsored event will go to the Breast Cancer Campaign — a charity chosen by the station because the disease has affected the family of part of its crew over the last year. To support the team's efforts either go along to the event or post a cheque payable to the Breast Cancer Campaign to Ian Donovan at Okehampton Fire Station, 4 North Street, Okehampton.
