Meet Dolly, the chicken loved by Westmoor Clinic
Our Braveheart Award this August goes to Dolly. On Tuesday 11th July, Dolly the chicken was brought to Westmoor as she had a very large growth under her wing.
After a brief discussion, her owner decided that Dolly needed to have the recommended surgery to remove the growth. On the 13th of July, Dolly was admitted to Westmoor for her surgery, theatre was prepared and she was anaesthetised. Dr van der Spuy, who performed the surgery, said that the procedure was somewhat complicated due to the close proximity of the wing veins as well as the size of the tumour.
The surgery was a success and the 140g tumour was removed. Dolly weighed a lot less afterwards as the tumour was approximately 13.5% of her body weight. Dolly was discharged from Westmoor the same day and lovingly cared for by her owner until she was fully fit again.
To everyone’s surprise, Dolly was presented for examination again on Saturday the 29th of July, as she had a rather severe tear in her comb and wound on her head possibly caused by a natural predator. Dolly was once again anaesthetised so that the wounds could be stitched and unfortunately a part of her comb had to be amputated as it was irreversibly damaged. Dr van der Spuy said the surgery went very well and Dolly was discharged the same day into the care of her owner.
Dolly is nearly 10 years old, doing well after her surgeries and is loved by us all here at Westmoor Vets.
