OKEHAMPTON Argyle begin their Carlsberg South West Peninsula League season next Saturday (August 16) with an away fixture at Liverton United, kick-off 3pm.
This is followed by their first home fixture on Wednesday August 20 at 6.30pm against a strong Royal Marines team, a new entrant to the league.
Okehampton have played four pre-season friendlies and commenced with an excellent 1-1 draw away to Premier Division side Clyst Rovers. This was followed with a slightly disappointing home draw 3-3 to Devon and Exeter side Clyst Valley before encountering the might of high-flying Premier side Plymouth Parkway who inflicted a 6-0 home defeat on the Okes.
Last Saturday, Okehampton played hosts to Camelford who had finished fourth in division one west of the Peninsula League last season.
A good result had been hoped for, but with Adam Mortimer away on holiday, the Okes lacked penetration up front despite some brilliant play from Steve Kinsey who has been outstanding in all the friendlies.
Despite missing the influential Ed Squire due to illness, Okehampton matched Camelford in midfield and Matt Sanders once again shone for the Okes, but Camelford really showed the home side how to finish and ran out 4-0 winners.
New signing Tom Reilly put in another good performance at the back, but the Okes persisted with a three-man line back line and the defenders found themselves constantly outnumbered.
Charlie Bond, the club secretary said hopefully, this lesson will have been learned for next Saturday's league opener.
