IMPRESSIVE local musicians The Changing Room will be appearing at Calstock Arts tonight.

The Changing Room are beginning to make a stir nationally in the folk world.

Heavily influenced by the industrial heritage of Cornwall, this Looe-based band are ambassadors for collaboration and social singing.

Their songs feature rousing choruses and catchy hooks that will keep you swaying and humming all week!

Sam Kelly and Tanya Brittain, who are the core of the band, will be joined on stage by Jamie Francis, Evan Carson and Morrigan Palmer-Brown.

The support act will be local performer, Will Keating.

The Changing Room were winners of Kan rag Kernow 2015 (a Cornish language song competition) and the International Pan Celtic Song Contest 2015 in Ireland. Sam also won the horizon award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2016.

Their debut album, Behind the Lace was one of The Telegraph’s folk albums of the year for 2015.

Tanya has a musical career going back 30 years. Her part in the band is most often the songwriting. She has been very active in promoting music in the South West for the last 10 years, including the Looe Festival.

Sam Kelly has been involved in a number of other well-received folk projects. He has been described as ‘a captivating performer (who) has one of the best young male voices in British acoustic roots music’ by Sean Lakeman.

Their material frequently reflects their Cornish home including traditional songs and many self-penned pieces. Caradon Hill is about life as a miner in the area. Zephania Job refers to the entrepreneur of Polperro who was able to be a benefactor to the town off the back of his shady dealings. The beautiful Bal Maiden’s Waltz is about the hard experiences of those women in the county’s mining industry.

The Changing Room (like Will Keating) perform some songs in Cornish as well as English.
