PUPILS from Princetown Primary School and other schools in the area will be able to quiz professionals about their jobs and get inspired as to what career paths they would like to take in the future at an Aspirations Day this month.

Hosted by Princetown Primary School on March 16 from 10am to 3pm, the event will see people from a diverse range of jobs and professions giving information about what they do and the skills needed to do it. The day aims to help the understanding of why curricular subjects and the skills developed throughout school are the keys to help prepare children to unlock their potential, raising their aspirations for future opportunities.

Headteacher Phil Whittley said the idea came from his former post at a school in Barnstaple where a Year 5 girl was disengaged with maths learning and when asked what her aspirations were, she said she wanted to be a fashion designer but had no idea what a role maths played in such a profession.

He said: ‘I invited a lady who made bespoke wedding dresses to the aspirations event and the girl went straight to this lady and had a long conversation. The outcome was that the girl completely transformed her approach to maths and started engaging in lessons.’
