Carlsberg South West Peninsula Elburton Villa 3 Tavistock AFC 0 SUPPORTERS of Tavistock were wandering which team they would see — the Lambs slaughtered by Witheridge or the 'Lions' who conquered Porthleven and Newton Abbot in past weeks? In the event they saw aspects of both but most tellingly well before the end of this turgid affair against Elburton Villa they were once more treated to a pusillanimous performance by Tavistock — who, according to club physio Dave Chanter, taking a theme from the 'Wizard of Oz' — played collectively as a team of tin men in search of a heart. In a first half largely devoid of good football Tavistock created a number of good chances but failed to take advantage of any. In contrast the home team were a blunt instrument trying to bludgeon a way through but rarely threatened Andy Meeds in the Lambs goal. Within five minutes of the second half the visitors had self destructed with naive defending presenting the Villa with two easy goals. Effectively this was game over as the Tavistock players appeared to lose any appetite for the fight and dissolved into a rabble with no shape or desire. Sadly Lee Ireland, one of the few Lambs players to warrant any praise, had to leave the field with what appeared to be a serious knee injury and his absence will be missed over the rest of the season. As the game began to peter out Elburton compounded another poor display from Tavistock by adding a third goal on the break to take a deserved victory. The propensity of Tavistock to capitulate when conceding a goal is a worry to the management and they said it is time for the players to take collective responsibility instead of bleating like spring lambs and blaming each other. l On Saturday Tavistock AFC are at home to St Blazey, kick off 2.45pm.
