MISERABLE weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of runners of all ages taking part in the Tavistock town relays recently. The event takes place annually, over a one-mile course in the Meadows. It is organised by Tavistock Athletic Club, with Rob Kirby leading the team.

In the fun run, TAC member Joseph O'Loughlin, aged nine, ran a very fast mile, winning easily in seven minutes exactly. Nathan Holland took second place, finishing in seven minutes 51 seconds and Xavier Flashman was third, in 8.01. Charlie Shipton was first female to finish, in 8.38 and Club runner Olivia Bates was fourth female in 9.16.

Next to race were the junior teams. East Cornwall Harriers entered six teams out of the 14 in this class, and were to provide the first two teams home, both in the Under16 Boys category. The winning team of Mark Budge, Dan Nash, Lewis Pullin and Steven Sims ran exceptionally well, to finish in 22.44 – a time which would have given them fifth place in the adult race which was to follow.

TAC's younger juniors ran strongly. The Under 14 Boys' team of Seth MacNamara-Waddington, Pete Jarman, Will Johnson and James Best won their age category, as did the Under 14 Girls' team of Claire Fraser, Lilly Spry, Emily Ackford and Sara Hornby.

The club's Under 12 Girls, Harriet Aimes, Hetty Tetly, Jasmine Edwards and Jody Stacy ran well to gain second place in their age group and the Under 14 Boys, Dean Smith, Isaac Stevenson, George White and Keiron Rooks, finished third.

The club was delighted that two local schools supported the event. Delaware Primary entered an Under 12 Boys' team (Harry Rowe, who ran his mile in 7.32, Reece Stevens, Sam Turner and Hadon Jacobs) finished in 31.59, in third place in their group.

Whitchurch Primary also entered Under 12 teams. Their A team, (Casha Lewdowski, Cara Whitfield Smith, Chriss Poyntz and TAC member Callum Massey who ran his mile in 7.15) finished in 32.08 with B team (Florence Peace, Maddison Jeffory, Ben Milligan and TAC runner Kelsie Bradford) not far behind, in 33.47.

Tamar Trotters, of Saltash, won the senior event in 21.17, with a team from Exmouth Harriers not far behind in 21.46.

TAC's team of George Speak (5.30), Neil Barkell (5.41), Tony Symons (5.36) and marathon man Adam Holland (5.18) ran strongly to finish third in 22.05.

In sixth place was a team of very promising 16 year-olds from the club – Matt MacNamara-Waddington (5.52), Owen Drage (6.05), Reuben Grice (6.10) and Nick Champion (5.55).

TAC's third team of John Marshall (6.25), Pete Bazley (6.40), Steve Groombridge (5.54 and James Moray (6.20) finished tenth.

A team from Plymouth Harriers won the Male Vets trophy and East Cornwall Harriers won first Female Vets.

Open teams were thin on the ground this year.

Roman Gladiators took first place, Mutley Crew came second and a team from Ambrosia were third.

The club is most grateful to the individuals, schools and running clubs who supported the event.
