GULWORTHY and Lamerton primary schools welcomed two top sportsmen last week as part of a new sporting project. The federated schools have launched the Olympic-inspired 'Be the Best You Can Be!' programme, which enables youngsters to discover and develop the unique potential within themselves and encourages them to pursue and fulfil their dreams. Dr David Hemery, Olympic Gold medallist, former world record holder and founder of 21st Century Legacy, said: 'Everyone has a spark of greatness within them and through a combination of dreams and practical application they can achieve their potential, as long as they positively set their mind to it, believe in themselves and are prepared to work hard.' The 'Be The Best You Can Be!' programme included a staff development day, followed by the programme launch where an inspirational special speaker shared their story with the children. As role models, they kick-started the school launches and brought the 'achievement of dreams' into the curriculum. The launch is being followed by further themes designed to help young people discover the skills they need to follow their dreams and to begin their own successful journey. Men's British water polo captain Craig Figes visited Gulworthy Primary School to launch the programme and Lamerton Primary was visited by Joe Glanfield, Britain's double Olympic silver medal-winning sailor. Melody Nicholls, head teacher at Gulworthy and Lamerton, said: 'I was determined that our schools would be some of the ones to undertake the Be The Best You Can Be! programme as it begins to roll out nationally. 'The inspiration offered by high achievers, including Olympians and Paralympians, who strive to achieve their dreams is incredibly powerful and can really reach out and engage our young people. 'I was pleased to welcome Craig Figes and Joe Glanfield to the launches and my teachers and I look forward to delivering this exciting and transformational programme.'
