FIREFIGHTERS are appealing to people in West Devon to take care when starting bonfires, following an explosion while a man was burning waste on Saturday evening in Okehampton. An aerosol caºnister exploded on a bonfire of building materials, which was lit on council land at Northfield Road. Although there were residential properties nearby, fortunately no one was hurt. Two appliances from Okehampton attended the fire. Station Officer Ian Donovan from Okehampton Fire Station asked people to be responsible and think before they start such fires, particularly those involving building waste. He told the Times: 'People who light bonfires must be responsible for checking that they are no materials such as petrol or aerosols which can explode. 'They must also be careful where they light the fire and think of the serious consequences and people receiving serious injuries that could result. 'Make sure that when lighting fires in the first place, they are away from residential properties. If in any doubt call the fire brigade or local council. 'Also the person lighting the fire should remain there at all times while it burns and make sure it is put out at the end.' l A MAN was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital on Friday, after the lorry he was driving was in collision with a digger which it is believed had slipped off a trailer from another vehicle. The digger also hit a nearby railway bridge. Fire crews from Okehampton and North Tawton were called to the incident which took place around 10am on the B3215 at Iron Bridge Cross, near Okehampton. Firefighters made sure the road and the vehicles were made safe. And Okehampton firecrews rescued a man who was trapped in his car following a road accident at Elmead Cross, near Folly Gate, on Friday evening. Five vehicles were involved in the incident which happened around 7pm. The man, who is believed to be in his late teens, was released by firefighters using power tools and taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Two appliances from Okehampton were called to the scene. Station Officer Ian Donovan said there was a lot of oil spillage on the road and his crews cleaned up the road. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
