TWO intrepid under ten-year olds who cycled over 100 miles in a fundraising challenge have raised more than £1,500 for local charities.
Keen cyclists Freddie and Charlie Day (nine and six) set themselves a challenge of cycling coast to cost from Ilfracombe to Plymouth in three days — averaging 30 miles a day.
The boys smashed their target to raise £1,639, which will be split between Children’s Hospice South West and the boys’ bike club Dartmoor Velo. Each charity will receive £819.50, thanks to the boy’s pedal-power.
Accompanied by their mum, dad and grandfather for the entire coast-to-coast ride, the boys were also joined in Tavistock Meadows by members of Dartmoor Velo to help them over the finish line.
Freddie and Charlie attend Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary School and have been riding bikes since the age of three, regularly taking part in cyclocross and mountain bike races. But this challenge was a first of its kind for the boys.
Their parents Chris and Rachel Day said they were ‘unbelievably proud’ of both boys.
Rachel said: ‘They were 100 per cent committed to the challenge and didn’t complain at all that they were tired.
‘We rode 44 miles on the first day and when we finished they still wanted to play on their bikes!
‘We have raised a huge amount of money for both causes and are so grateful for all the support that we have received from our friends, family and the local community.’
