AFTER 15 years of timber management, the sawmill at Crocadon in east Cornwall will be closing its doors this spring and will be auctioning off its remaining timber and equipment later this month.

Although only established at Crocadon in 2002, there has been a sawmill on the Pentillie estate on and off for over 100 years. In days gone by it would have been the hub of the estate’s oak woodland which still stretches from St Mellion village to the edge of the River Tamar.

Forester turned saw-miller Mike Mann managed Pentillie’s woodlands for 18 years before opening the Crocadon sawmill.

Unfortunately, with cheaper imported timber readily available over the past few decades, the demand for English timbers has suffered and so Crocadon Sawmill will close for good in the spring.

All the timber and equipment will be sent to auction as a final sale and the last opportunity to acquire timber from this collection.

The auction will take place online by Husseys of Exeter. It will run from Thursday, February 16 to Thursday, February 23. Viewing at Crocadon will take place from February 16 to 19, from 10am to 4pm.
