TWO students from the sixth form of Callington Community College Holly Nevill and Rhianna Colvin have been selected to participate in this year’s ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ project.
This is an annual event run by the Holocaust Education Trust to preserve the memory of those who suffered during the Holocaust of WW2. The students, along with their teacher Peter Maunder, will attend a series of four events, including a visit to the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps in Poland.
They will meet with survivors of the Holocaust, tour the concentration camp and partake in follow up activities in order to preserve the memory of those who perished, suffered or survived.
The Rotary Club of Callington has made a very generous donation to help finance the trip for the students.
Keith Harris, president of the Rotary Club and an ex-teacher of the college, said: ‘The club is looking forward to the students giving a presentation to us about their experiences.’
Sean Morris, principal, said: ‘This is an opportunity for two of our students to gain a real understanding of the Holocaust — one of the most significant events of the 20th century — and to pass on what they learn so that no-one forgets how appalling the Holocaust was and so that we all remain vigilant.’
