Callington residents have been praised for the ‘amazing’ donation of food received by a local charity.
Callington town crier Tony Stentiford helped volunteers collect more than 100 boxes of food for the town’s foodbank at the local Tesco supermarket.
The three-day collection raised 1,341 kilograms of food.
Mr Stentiford said: ‘This donation is amazing.
‘This provides food – as well as food for thought – for the people of Callington.’
The Callington Foodbank is based at 1 Launceston Road in the town and is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2pm to 4pm.
Foodbank manager Pam Stephens said: ‘Once again we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the people of Callington and the surrounding areas.’
‘Our December collection weekend at Tesco Callington has helped to replenish our warehouse stock at a busy time of year.
‘Thank you to the Tesco staff, our volunteers at the foodbank and to everyone who donated to help locals in need.’
Foodbanks around the country provide emergency food for people in crises. The charity has said that every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income.
A simple box of food makes a big difference with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.
The Tesco store has hosted collections for the foodbank since 2011 and also has a permanent collection point which is emptied once a week and the items sorted into boxes by volunteers at the warehouse.
Store manager Martin Hawkins said: ‘It was a fantastic result.
‘We would also like to express our thanks to our generous customers and all the helpers who made this collection such a success.’
Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days’ emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
