A MUSICAL family from Zeal Monachorum have hit the right notes in their recent music exams. Carl Woodison, 14, who is already an experienced trumpet player, passed his Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, grade 5 trumpet examination with flying colours. Carl?s perfect rendering of George Gershwin?s I?ve Got Rhythm scored a top mark of 30 ? he also gained 29 marks for his playing of Panis angelicus towards an overall mark of 136 points out of a possible 150, to gain a distinction. Carl is a student at Okehampton College, and recently returned from Hong Kong where he was the lead trumpet player with the school?s Big Band. Carl suffers from Asperger?s Syndrome but has built a reputation locally for his brilliant Eddie Calvert playing. His sister Sarah, 9, attends Okehampton Primary School, plays the tenor horn, and recently took her first exam, gaining 130 marks out of a possible 150 to be awarded a distinction. Both are pupils of Robin Partin, of Torrington, and Valerie Berry, of Okehampton College. The children?s parents, Trevor and Jane, are also local music teachers.
