NOT even a little rain could dampen the spirits at the 111th Hatherleigh Carnival on Saturday, with a wonderful level of entries for both the carnival and children's procession and the historic flaming tar barrels making for another memorable carnival weekend.
The carnival fun began on Friday, with the traditional pulling of the unlit barrels. The first burning barrel run took place at 5am on carnival day, with the majestic Eggesford Hunt later filling the town square with horses and hounds.
The children's procession saw a great number of entries in the afternoon. The procession was led by Hatherleigh Silver Band, followed by the carnival prince and princess William and Abigail Bennett on their poignant float which paid respects to the soldiers of the First World War.
Carnival queen Tillie Jackson walked for the afternoon procession, before leading the evening procession.
Louise Bater, a member of the carnival committee, said: 'The evening brought a little rain — inevitably — but not enough to dampen the wonderful atmosphere. There was so much to amuse and entertain the wonderful crowds.
'The floats were bright, detailed, inspired and of an exceptional standard. It did not make judging easy at all but was brilliant for the many spectators to enjoy. There were lots of creative walking guys, the massed bands, majorettes, samba band and three street entertainers — all of which, we hope, made the 2014 Hatherleigh Carnival a thoroughly enjoyable experience.'
