THE popular RAF Harrowbeer 1940s weekend is all set to entertain crowds with two days of free events on the former WWII airfield this weekend.
As this year is the 75th anniversary of the opening of the airfield on August 15 1941, there is a special Remembrance Service at 11am on Saturday morning and the organisers hope that everyone at the event at the time, will join the two-minute silence, as all those who lost their lives whilst serving at RAF Harrowbeer are remembered.
Visitors to the RAF Harrowbeer 1940s event in Yelverton this weekend can win a unique prize in the ’Spitfire Experience’ draw that takes place each day. The first prize is either to climb into the cockpit of the Spitfire and start the 27litre Merlin engine, or to receive a specially made ‘Harrowbear’ teddy bear, dressed in RAF uniform. There are many other prizes, all donated by local businesses, to be won too.
Attractions include the Spitfire starting up every hour, steam engine rides and guided tours around the airfield, vintage agricultural vehicles, cars and motorbikes and model aircraft flying displays.
Visitors are also encouraged to come along in 1940s dress and join in with the re-enactors and living history displays.
