AN Okehampton resident is set to conquer her fear of heights when she abseils down the side of England's highest waterfall.

Charlotte Hoar, 34, (pictured right) will take on the 220 ft challenge to raise money in memory of her father, who after living with diabetes for much of his life, died from kidney disease.

Charlotte said: 'Thanks to the care and support dad received through the kidney unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, he lived for a further six years, having kidney dialysis three times a week.

'Thanks to them he lived long enough to see me start a family and for my first-born to have happy memories of her grandfather.

'I'm quite scared of heights, but it's worth it to know that I'm helping to find a cure for kidney disease.

'I'm determined to complete this challenge and raise as much money as I can for this important cause.'

There are currently 603 people waiting for an organ transplant in the region, most of them for kidney transplants.

Fundraiser for the event, Jim Morrison, said: 'We wanted to organise an abseil that was a bit different, something that people could see was a real challenge, both physically and mentally.'

The abseil will take place over two days on Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28 at Canonteign Falls in Christow.
