THE first concert of the year to be performed by West Devon Chorale is due to take place at Buckfast Abbey on Saturday January 20. The 28-voice choir, whose members are drawn from all over West and South Devon, will be conducted by music director Michael Johnson. The main work will be a performance of Gabriel Fauré's ever-popular Requiem. This gentle and haunting piece is a favourite with choirs and ideal to perform in the stunning setting of the abbey church. The work will be performed in the original style with organ accompaniment. Soloists will be Louise Hardy, soprano, and Peter Bawden, baritone. Plymouth-based Jason Smart will be organist. The concert begins with four motets by Taverner, Sheppard, Byrd and Weelkes, all suitable for the immediate post-Christmas period. Also included in the programme will be Maurice Duruflés Four Motets on Gregorian Themes. Admission to the concert is by ticket, available in advance for £6.50, concessions apply. Unsold tickets will be available on the door. For tickets, call 01752 776479. The concert begins at 7.30pm.
