A WARNING was this week issued to dog owners by a West Devon parish council fed up with growing quantities of pet mess on its village green. Sourton Parish Council says it will take a hard line with anyone not picking up mess left by dogs ? and will consider legal action if it catches anyone. Geraldine Jury, vice-chairman of the council and chairman of the village hall committee, said the problem on the village green and around the hall had become a real issue. Mrs Jury said: ?The green, the parish hall and the church are there for everyone to enjoy and no-one wants to walk in dog poo. ?The village green is next to the granite way. We get people coming out to use the cycle path, they park up, let their dogs out of the cars and the dogs can?t wait until they get up onto the moor to do their business. ?And we get a lot of people coming through to walk on the moor. Our village hall is top notch now, we?ve had a lot of repairs done, and the other day when we had a function we had dog mess walked all through it.? She said the church liked to put tables outside for cream teas on occasion and the village pre-school group use the hall and like to be able to go outside on the grass when the weather is good. However, quantities of dog mess on the green was not only unpleasant for users of the green, it could be a health hazard too. She said at the recent parish council meeting, it was agreed to take a tough stance with offenders. ?Signs will be going up warning everybody and where we have evidence, we will prosecute, said Mrs Jury. ?I love dogs but if I had one, I would clear up after it, but unfortunately some people just couldn?t care less and we have had enough,? she said.
