AS part of the Buckland Monachorum Neighbourhood Plan, people who live in the parish were invited to suggest what things they would like to see improved. A number commented on the issue of cyclists on the A386 and the slow moving congestion sometimes caused by a build up of traffic behind them. A local Tavistock cycle group was asked for ideas that might help and one of the suggestions was to make sure that motorists understood that you are allowed to pass cyclists by crossing double white lines provided it is safe to do so. The group thought that reminding motorists of this part of the Highway Code might both help limit congestion while making sure that when overtaking cyclists, motorists didn't get dangerously close to them. The relevant section from the Highway Code (129) is reproduced below.  'Article 129: Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less. Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 and 26.' Ric Cheadle Chairman of Buckland Monachorum Parish Council
