LAMERTON WI recently celebrated the centenary of the formation of the national Women's Institute organisation with a day of special events.
The day was centred around the idea of the WI being part of the community. It started with coffee and a service in St Peter's Church led by the Rev Andy Atkins. Hymns were played by the local organist Val Hill and there were readings by two past presidents and another member from Lamerton WI. The church looked beautiful with floral arrangements designed for the occasion by two WI members.
A commemorative rose was planted by president Carole McQuarrie-Watson at Lamerton Village Hall followed by a superb lunch laid on in the hall, which had been beautifully decorated with flowers, balloons and bunting. The meeting was pleased to welcome special guests from Chillaton WI and a representative from Camplehaye Residential Home.
After lunch, the juniors from Lamerton Primary School entertained the WI with a well rehearsed medley of songs which were very well received.
There were displays of crafts and skills learnt over the last few years, photographs of activities and also some of the archive material.
At the end of the afternoon the youngest girl from the pupils and three of the oldest WI members helped to cut a celebration cake.
