MARY Tavy councillor Terry Pearce has been elected the new mayor of West Devon following a meeting of the borough council on Tuesday. Cllr Pearce was elected to the council last May and is currently serving on Mary Tavy Parish Council. Educated in West Devon at Gulworthy Primary and Tavistock Schools, he has worked in the food industry for many years. He started out in the family business of market gardeners in the Tamar Valley and in recent years was regional manager for a major dairy and delicatessen company. Cllr Pearce said he was delighted to take on the new role. 'It's a great honour and I'm looking forward to it immensely,' he said. 'Travelling around the country in my job over the years has always made me very aware of how fortunate I was to live in West Devon with its great people and beautiful location. 'I aim to promote West Devon wherever I go – it really is the place to be!' His wife June will be his mayoress and his chosen charity for the year is Children's Hospice South West. Stepping down as mayor, Cllr Dennis Bater thanked the Council for its support during his year. Cllr Alison Clish-Green was appointed deputy mayor.
