A DETERMINED runner from East Cornwall has almost reached her 200th marathon target in under two years — all in aid of a local charity.
Sharon Daw, a retired dairy farmer who lives near Callington, decided to undertake the mammoth task as a challenge not only for her own well-being but also to try and raise awareness of Devon Aid Korogwe (DAK).
So far, her achievements include ten marathons in ten days, completing 52 marathons in 46 weeks — and at the Southampton Marathon recently she made it 58 races in 52 weeks.
Sharon’s grand finale will be her 200th full marathon in Dorchester on May 27.
‘The charity asked me if I would run a marathon for their charity and on meeting them I realised what good they do as a small charity,’ said Sharon.
DAK was started nearly 20-years-ago by Vivien and Graham England from Bratton Clovelly. Their policy was that every penny donated goes to the projects and nothing was taken for commission.
The couple have just returned from the Korogwe district of Tanzania where they have been working to secure water pipe lines, wells and rainwater harvesting for rural villages and schools. Their work also promotes health education.
‘It’s been tough some days but mainly over the winter — it’s been a great experience,’ added Sharon. ‘I have met really inspiring people.’

Vivien England said that the charity concentrated entirely on water: ‘So far almost 60 villages and schools have benefited. Water related diseases, causing many deaths, have been a great problem from polluted water holes and streams and rivers — the crocodile attacks can often occur, causing the loss of limbs and even death. Domestic points, with clean water in taps or wells, are now much closer to villagers. Much time and energy can now be saved from having the long journeys to fetch and carry the heavy buckets giving more time, energy — and safety — to carry out income generating occupations.’
She added that it was very kind that Sharon agreed to support the charity through her running and that all funds raised, and donations given, will be used entirely for the charity’s projects.
