OKEHAMPTON Local History Society will hold its next meeting on Wednesday September 12.
Speaker, Robert Hesketh, will give a talk on Devon place names. Robert is a member of Moorland Guides, working with the Dartmoor National Park Authority to provide guided walks and support educational programmes. The talk promises to provide insight to some of the stranger place names in the county, such as Black Dog, and Half Moon.
There was no meeting last month, but in July Helen Harris talked about the Haytor Tramway and Stover Canal.
Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, at 7.30pm in the Ockment Centre. New members are always welcome and anyone interested can call secretary Jane Lehni on 01837 840087. Non-members may attend at a charge of £2 per person.
