HUNDREDS of local people turned out to show their respect and gratitude for the armed forces at the town's Remembrance Sunday service.

The parade through the town included 115 soldiers who were attending a training exercise at Okehampton Camp with 47 Field Regiment Royal Artillery.

Peter Williams, branch secretary of the Okehampton Royal British Legion said: 'It was quite extraordinary, I have never seen the parade in Okehampton that big before.

'The remembrance service was full to the rafters but we managed to fit everyone in for the service.

'The parade back to the town centre after the service was wonderful, with both sides of the street choc-a-bloc with members of the public.

'Once the parade had finished, there was a round of applause, which is something I have not heard at these parades before.

'It was truly wonderful.'
