FIREFIGHTERS from West Devon were sent to a report of a chimney fire at Lydford on Friday.

Around 6pm, one crew and the ranger from Tavistock discovered a fire in an open fireplace, which had spread to rafters in the roof. One appliance from Okehampton was also sent for.

Two breathing apparatus and two hose-reels were used to extinguish the blaze, which severely damaged 5% of the slate roof. Various ladders, chimney gear and the thermal imaging camera were used.

Watch commander Glenn Arundel advised household owners with a wood burner to ensure the area is swept at this time of year.
