FIREFIGHTERS rescued a tortoise and a hamster from a smoke-logged room at a Lamerton property on Saturday afternoon. A fire engine from Tavistock was called to the property just before 2.30pm and discovered a small fire in a ground floor lounge. Smoke alarms had alerted the occupier, who left the property with her three children. The Yelverton fire crew was called to a car fire opposite the old football pitch on Saturday at 10.53pm. The car was well alight and one jet was used to extinguish it. The Yelverton crew was also called to a collision outside the Burrator Inn at Dousland on Sunday at 10.23pm. No-one was trapped, but first aid was administered to the casualties. On Sunday at 5.20pm two crews from Tavistock were called to a fire in a toaster at Crelake Close in the town. The fire was extinguished by the time they arrived. Two fire engines from Tavistock were mobilised to a a fire in a room at Brown?s on Sunday. On arrival at 10.45pm, the crews discovered a small fire in a first floor bathroom. They extinguished itand ventilated the property. Firefighters were called to Church Hill in Whitchurch last Friday after a garage and surrounding gardens were flooded. One crew from Tavistock attended just before 6.30am and found 12 inches of flooding in the gardens and road, and two inches of water in the garage. Watch commander Glenn Arundel said the flooding was caused by a vast quantity of water that a drain on the moors between the Pimple and Middlemoor could not handle.
