THERE will be many events taking place this year to commemorate World War One, but Callington hopes to have one of the best — thanks, hopefully, to the help of the public.

A big community event, in an initiative led by Callington Town Band, is planned to commemorate the centenary of the Great War with drama and songs taking the audience through the 1914 to 1918 conflict.

Performers will re-enact significant moments in the war with songs of the period, such as 'Good-bye, Dolly Gray' and 'Keep the Home Fires Burning', which will be led by a community group of singers with the audience encouraged to join in the choruses.

Three performances will take place in Callington Town Hall on Friday, November 21 and two on Saturday, November 22, and iconic scenes, such as the Christmas football game between the British and German troops, will be portrayed with battle scenes projected onto the back of the stage. All this will be brought together by a professional director.

Male and female actors and singers — soloists and choir — are needed in order to make this a huge success.

The town band held a 'Recruiting office' at the recent Portreeve's charity day, where they were signing up interested people, but need more to come forward.

Rehearsals for this ambitious community event begin on September 6 with music workshops in the town hall from 10am to noon. The workshops will be free to attend and will be open to anyone who enjoys singing, whether they intend to take part in the production or not.

Anyone interested in being involved should contact Shirley Morse by emailing [email protected]">[email protected] or 01579 350336 or visit the next 'Recruiting office' table at the community day in the town hall on Saturday, March 22.
