THERE?S a chance to follow the ancient monks? path between two of Devon?s great abbeys early next year, when the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team holds the annual 12 Across, Two Down Walk. The ten-mile route follows part of the track across Dartmoor between Buckfast Abbey and Tavistock Abbey, a path known as the Maltern Way. It is the only east-west trans-moor route which has been way-marked by crosses, 12 ancient, two modern, and traverses the narrowest part of the the open moor as the crow flies. The walk starts at Vennford Reservoir and finishes at the Railway Inn in Princetown and takes place on Sunday February 26, leaving at 9am. The aim of the walk is for teams to plan their own routes, visiting all 14 crosses along the way, reaching Princetown before the sun sets. Checkpoints along the route will be manned by members of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue group, which will also provide safety sweep teams. Teams who wish to take part in the event should be equipped for walking on the open moor and should include at least one member who is proficient at map reading. A minimum donation of £4 per team member is required ? all proceeds go towards Dartmoor Rescue team funds.
