A GROUP of students who have been instrumental in setting up the Friday Night Project in Callington were presented with the CATS (Community Action Through Sport) Volunteer of the Year Award last week at a ceremony attended by 350 people.
At the fourth awards evening of its kind held at St Mellion International Golf Resort, 170 students from Callington Community College and Saltash.net Community School received sports awards for their volunteering work.
For the first time a young volunteer of the year award was presented to Jessica Tait, 12, from Callington College, who received four separate nominations for her voluntary work with St John Ambulance, the Cubs, Launceston Rugby Club and Delaware Primary School. She was described as an inspiration to all young people.
The event was supported by Devon and Cornwall Police and Youth Cornwall, and guests included Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Romain Larrieu, international boxer Q Shillingford, Olympic athlete Marrion Sutton and downhill mountain biker Chris Lamley.
The Friday Night Project runs two café nights a month in Callington Town Hall and a big event once a month, the next being a Valentine's party tomorrow (Friday).
