THE funeral of Kenneth John Sanders (Ken), aged 68, took place at St Eustachius Church, Tavistock on May 12. The Rev Rodney Baxendale conducted the service and organist was Jonathan Mann, who ended with an uplifting Toccata and Fugue by Bach. Ken was born in Lapford in 1937 and from Lapford Primary School went to Queen Elizabeth School in Crediton. From there he went to Bristol University Veterinary School, qualifying in 1960. He came to Tavistock to practise with MacKellar and Partners (now Westmoor Veterinary Centre) in 1962. In 1964 he suffered a serious car crash while on duty from which he emerged dented but undaunted. His interest in veterinary politics led to chairmanship of the BVA Animal Welfare committee and subsequently of the BVA Small Animal committee. Ill health forced him to turn from national to local politics and in 1987 he was elected to Tavistock Town Council. Later that year he underwent a successful triple heart bypass. He became three times mayor of Tavistock, although his last term in 2002 was curtailed because of his health. He was proud of Tavistock and of being able to make a contribution to the successful town it is today. He was also a founder member and past president of the 31 Club (Tavistock Business Association) and, until 2003 an active member. His abiding interest, however, was his love and care for all creatures and his diagnostic ability. Although starting his career as a large animal vet he latterly devoted himself to small animals when he was no longer able to attend the larger ones. His main interests were rugby ? he had played for Launceston Rugby Club ? music, folk singing, travel and, above all, his family. Among his achievements on the town council were: l fought to upgrade the hospital and to retain casualty and consultant facilities l pushed through heating in the pannier market and improved lighting l fought for the skateboard facility in the Meadows and bought the ramp from Plymouth l helped change leases to allow bowls, tennis and allotment clubs their independence l helped agree lease for pool and Wharf l set up park and ride scheme for Goose Fair l pushed through revised Bedford Square scheme and fought against restrictions in on-street parking l fostered twinning with Pontivy, Celle and HMS Drake l with John Wright, fought for a farmers? market l upgraded children?s? play area l secured EU funding for Meadows lighting scheme l helped secure a loan for the rugby club.
