PREPARATIONS have begun for the West Devon team taking part in this summer?s Devon Youth Games, which is being held in Tiverton on Saturday July 15. Bringing together more than 1,000 young people from eight local authority areas in the county, the Devon Youth Games promote community youth sport and create multiple new sport development opportunities. Sports this year include aquathlon (swimming/running), athletics, badminton, girls? cricket, hockey, netball, street sports, tag rugby, tennis and volleyball. With funding from the Active Devon Sports Partnership and DML, the games will attract more than 2,500 trialists - who in the coming months will compete for places on the day. ITV Westcountry?s Mark Tyler and Gemini FM?s Charlie Moseby are already booked for the event, and the games will be opened by a top sporting celebrity. Hosted by Mid Devon District Council, the games will take place in at four venues across the town: the Exe Valley Leisure Centre, Tiverton High School, East Devon College and Tiverton Rugby Club. Tammy Messenger, West Devon Borough Council?s sport development officer, said she was looking forward to a fun-packed day. ?We?re already starting the planning work for the event and we will be publicising the West Devon trials shortly,? she added.
