SIXTY-eight new homes will be built at Newport in Callington following the approval of permission by Caradon District Council's planning committee last week. The plan by Churchill Property Group will include 40% affordable housing and an area of public open space. Callington ward members had hoped to get the proposal deferred in a bid to discuss the inclusion of a public car park in the scheme but this was rejected. In a recent article in the Times Cllrs Andrew Long and Chris Thomas said they were concerned over the loss of shoppers' on-street parking and residents' parking should the development go ahead. Although they were not against the homes plan they stressed the need for a car park in the Newport area of the town which had shops, a pub and housing without sufficient off-road parking spaces. Cllr Thomas said this week he would still be pursing the idea of a car park with officers as there was a piece of land available which could be accessed from the new estate. Councillors had hoped a small reduction in the number of affordable homes on the site could enable funds to be released for a car park through the sale of open market housing. A SCHEME to build 25 affordable homes at South Hill Road, Callington, was refused by Caradon planners last week. Callington Town Council was against the application by Westcountry Housing Association which members said would be out of character with the rural nature of the road. It was also recommended for refusal by planning officers, despite the need for affordable housing. Town councillors said there was sufficient allocation of land inside the development boundary for affordable housing and they claimed developers were taking advantage of this loophole to stretch the development boundary to the detriment of the green environment.
