WEATHER which was much more summer-like than of late helped draw the crowds at the annual Latchley, Chilsworthy and Cox Park Horticultural show last weekend.
The show was held at Delaware Farm at Gunnislake and the committee sincerely thanked Chris and Georgina Facey for the use of their field. The dry weather in the week leading up to the show and on show day itself, enabled visitors to catch up with old friends and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine while Callington Town Band played for the pleasure of the crowd.
Almost 800 exhibits were displayed in the marquee, with the vegetable entries noticeably affected by the recent poor weather. The committee paid tribute to all judges and stewards and especially to Hywel Edwards, an accomplished wine judge from Tavistock, who stood in at the very last minute to judge the wines. He said the standard of the wine entries was particularly good.
Bridget Shillaber, deputy head of Delaware and Gunnislake Primary Schools presented the trophies to the winning class recipients and she was thanked by show chairman, Jeff Hearn who presented her with a bouquet of flowers.
Barbara Kelly from Chilsworthy took the trophy for 'Best in Show' with a fine piece of needlecraft worked in the shape of a shell. Nicole Doidge from Gunnislake took the 'Best Photograph in Show' — a lovely picture of a cow and owner.
'Best Horticultural Exhibit' for Sweet Peas went to Gordon Phypers and 'Best Exhibit of Hand Knitting' went to Mrs Pat Rowse. 'Best Turned-Out Vintage Vehicle and Driver' was Sam Gardner from Gunnislake in a 1927 Austin Heavy 12/4 Clifton 5-seat Tourer which has been owned by Sam for some 46 years.
