FAMILIES from Chagford Primary School joined teachers and govenors on a 'Ground Force' day to transform the school's vegetable garden recently.
Everyone worked hard in the sunshine moving soil donated by local landowners and great mounds of compost.
The school is working towards the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy and as part of this process they have begun to supplement the school lunches with produce harvested from the garden, along with reducing food miles by using locally sourced ingredients for school meals.
Head teacher Catherine Rees Stephan said: 'It is fantastic that the whole school community has got involved and I am so grateful to everyone who came along at the weekend to help build our raised beds. We have lots of keen gardeners at Chagford School — there is nothing better than seeing children picking plums and then enjoying a home made plum crumble for lunch the following day!'
