Carol Ball’s clinic, Beaworthy Skincare offers everything from removal of moles and minor imperfections to skin peels and wrinkle treatments. She offers to counter male baldness and rejuvenate perimenopausal and menopausal skin.
She holds a BSc (Hons) degree in nursing, is an advanced nurse practitioner and a member of the BACN, the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses. Carol worked as an NHS derm specialist nurse for many years and qualified in medical aesthetics after deciding this would be a better way to help people. “We used to see quite a lot of problems coming through from people who had completed a procedure they weren’t qualified to do,” she says. “I moved into private aesthetics work after becoming frustrated with the way these patients had been treated by some individuals in the private sector. I felt the best approach was to join as an aesthetic nurse practitioner to ensure that the ladies and gents approaching these treatments would receive the optimum treatment and care.”
She also felt that those with chronic skin conditions – such as acne – might benefit from a different approach. “They often felt they had little sympathy from the clinician they were seeing, that it was just a few spots’, but for that patient it had an impact on their confidence and quality of life,” says Carol.
"In the dermatology department we could change their lives around with specific medication but the side effects could be at risk from very dry skin or depression or their liver might respond in a negative way and need to stop medication for the interim, so spots could reappear. A new generation of patients are looking for alternative treatments and I am able to offer alternative treatments supported by evidence based research.”
Ethics are important for Carol. She won’t provide fillers or anti-wrinkle treatments to those under 18 – in accordance with the law not to give Botox to children. She also takes care that any anti-wrinkle treatment is not given without a proper face-to-face consultation. She also will refer people back to the NHS over moles or other skin lesions that need assessment for any concerns about malignancy.
She is in the process of joining the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners, a new body to promote patient safety in the world of non-surgical aesthetics and hair restoration surgery. She has also obtained qualifications through UK Aesthetics, 4T MEDICAL.
She can treat skin conditions such as rosacea or acne with a plasma pen which can also be used to rejuvenate perimenopausal and menopausal skin. This treatment can also be used to improve the condition of skin burns and sun damage. Another treatment she offers is a light cube with Lumixa, which can boost collagen in the skin and also be used to treat conditions causing pain, such as shingles.
She offers minor surgery such as skin tag and blemish removal through shortwave diathemry. Moles and skin imperfections are removed using cautery or shave incisions (precision surgery). In short, she can help most people who will come through her door.
“I am devoted to looking after my patients, promoting skincare which results in my patients seeing themselves in a positive and more confident light,” she said. “Seeing these results through my patients has only fuelled my drive to help more people achieve the results they desire.”
Carol originally ran her clinic remotely, from her home in Beaworthy, covering an area from the north coast of Devon to Exeter in the east and Callington in the west, including the Tavistock area.
Her clients in the West Devon area are delighted she now has a permanent base in Tavistock, which opens on August 2nd. Beaworthy Aesthetics is at 3A Barley Market Street, Tavistock PL19 0JF. See beaworthyskincare.com. Carol is offering her first 20 patients £50 off their first wrinkle treatment.
