TREMENDOUS shouts and cheers bellowed from Hatherleigh Primary School recently when the school hosted its new and exciting town crier competition.

Pupils of all ages were encouraged to stand up during the school’s assembly, held on Thursday (October 20), to deliver a loud and clearly spoken town cry.

Special guest Hatherleigh Town Crier Ros Chard opened the competition by giving the children tips and also giving them an example of an excellent town cry.

The final children were Hugo Packer from reception; Harry Lewis, Year 1; Orla Pease, Year 2; Jessica Lewis and Elizabeth Dillon from Year 3; Mia Spears and Emily Lewis from Year 4; Poppy Mann, Ellie Fast and Mollie Foskett, Year 5, and William Ruffed from Year 6.

Hatherleigh Town Crier Ros Chard, alongside guest town criers Roy and Bee, then judged the competition to pick a top three. In third place was William Ruffed, in second place was Poppy Mann and the winner was Mollie Foskett.

The winning three will have the opportunity to attend the Hatherleigh Carnival town crier competition on November 12, where they will perform their cries to a bigger audience. Ros will also present an award to one of them for best dressed on that day.

One of the competition organisers, Donna Lewis, said that the school competition was a great success.
