A BERE Alston resident who raises money for charity was made a chevalier of the Military Order of the collar of Saint Agatha of Paterno at an investiture service at Buckfast Abbey on Saturday. Trevor Paddon-Hall, who was previously made a member of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem at a similar investiture in Tavistock Parish Church, was one of four people admitted to the charitable order ? two from England, one from Germany and one from the USA. The Saint Agatha order, like that of St Lazarus, has its origins at the time of the Crusades and has its own charity, specialising in helping children from underdeveloped countries and former communist countries. Mr Paddon-Hall has made numerous visits to orphanages in Eastern Europe, accompanying aid-filled lorries, and will be returning to Romania on July 25. Along with other equipment, he hopes to take 456 filled shoe boxes for children in two orphanages and one hospital for their Christmas. The first orphanage, the poorest of the two, is at Dej in the south, with 176 children aged 5 to 16. The second at Husi in the north has 210 children, and the Dej/Cluj children?s hospital has 70 children. These children have never seen fruit such as apples, oranges or bananas. Shoe boxes should be aimed at either a boy or girl, with the age ranges being 2 to 5 years, 6 to 11 years and 12 to 15 years. No tinned or packet food should be included, apart from sweets and chocolate. Each box should contain a card or letter to the child receiving the box. Anyone who would like to help by filling a shoe box or providing money to buy trainers or food can contact Trevor on 01822 840091 for more details.
