IF ANYONE has a sensible use for a redundant red telephone box there are three in Calstock parish that need some inspiration!

The parish council took on the ownership of the old-style public phone boxes in Latchley and St Ann's Chapel in 2008 and Harrowbarrow and Metherell in 2011 under the Adopt a Kiosk scheme by BT, paying £1 for each one.

The phones were taken out, but the structures kept as historic landmarks — the one in Latchley was transformed into a public library where people swap paperback books.

But while the Latchley library is proving quite a success the other kiosks are not being used for anything except by some as a toilet, parish councillors were told recently.

Parish clerk Sue Lemon said the council could do what it liked with the phone boxes as long as they were not used by another communications provider.

If they were sold they could fetch between £2,500 and £3,000.

She said this money could be used towards other things like paying for the public toilets in Gunnislake and Calstock, which will cost £14,000 a year to run.

The council wants to hear from parishioners who have a view on whether the red telephone boxes should stay or go, or any good community uses for them.
