WITH yet again the toss being lost by Folley, the Ordulph were put in to bat on a particularly dodgy wicket. Despite the loss of Statton early on, a watchfully patient partnership between Bridgewater and Westlake started to blossom, making light of the variable bounce conditions. Westlake (78) punished ruthlessly anything short of a length and Bridgewater (24) supported well. A cracking run rate was being set with the ton reached in less than 20 overs. With a massive score looking on the cards the Launceston bowlers struck. Firstly Bridgewater was removed by Bolt and then Westlake by Pengelly along with three more middle order Ordulph batsmen for less than 10 runs. With 25 or so runs still required for the Ordulph to get maximum batting points the ship was steadied by Folley (26 not out) supported well by M I Wheeler (12) and Lethbridge (10 not out). Freddie Wheeler in particular showed great restraint, with his forward defensive shot getting an airing for the first time this season. Given the wicket conditions a daunting total of 188 was set for Launceston to chase. Pick of the young Launceston bowling was Langford (2 for 44) and Pengelly (3 for 38). What was to follow was a devastating example of pace seam bowling from Bridgewater supported by Westlake. With his first ball of the innings Bridgewater removed Launceston opener and skipper Baker with searing delivery that leapt off a length to be well taken by M A Wheeler. In the same over Wilton was also removed clean bowled. Westlake in his first over removed Bolt caught by W Downham with Launceston now three wickets down for no runs. It was to get even worse during the next seven overs as a procession of Launceston batsmen fell to the sheer pace and accuracy of Bridgewater. Launceston had no answer to the onslaught. In less than nine overs the whole Launceston side was bowled out for only 15 runs. Such was the total domination by Bridgewater and Westlake that only two Launceston batsmen scored any runs at all, with eight on ducks. Bridgewater finished on career best figures of 6 for 2 off 4.5 overs, and Westlake with 3 for 7 off 4 overs. With maximum points from this superb win Ordulph find themselves well and truly in a position to challenge for the top spot in the league. Man of the match A Bridgewater and W Westlake. Points Ordulph 20, Launceston 4.
