THE man who set up the Tavistock branch of Lawsons ten years ago retired this week, after 31 years in the family business.
John Lawson introduced the company to Tavistock in 1992, and is handing over to his daughter Liz Lawson, who is currently managing director of the independent retailer, having previously gained experience managing the Tavistock branch.
John started his life as a horticulturist growing tomatoes and cut flowers at Elburton, before taking on the Lawsons shop in New George Street in Plymouth city centre.
The company Lawsons has been established for almost 100 years, selling kitchenware, hardware and gardening tools.
Liz Lawson said: 'My father has done a wonderful job building up the business to where it is now.
'He has strong beliefs of honesty, quality and fairness and has never been afraid of change. I am looking to continue in his footsteps.'
