OKEHAMPTON Rugby Club and Okehampton Carnival are two of the beneficiaries of the latest round of grants by Okehampton United Charity.

The charity trustees met at Okehampton College on July 31 and awarded three group grants and one sporting achievement grant. The rugby club was awarded £9,000 to relocate a new gym on to the club's site and £250 was awarded to support the Heart Start project, which is aiming to provide a defibrillator at All Saints Parish Church.

Okehampton Carnival received a grant of £700 to cover the cost of insuring the carnival, while a sporting grant was awarded to a young muay thai kickboxer.

The trustees of Okehampton Educational Foundation noted Okehampton College's current allocation was £39,311 and Okehampton Primary's allocation was £7,360.

They also noted applications for post-16 education grants for the past academic year are now closed, and the new application form for the 2013/14 academic year is available to download online at http://www.okehamptoncharities.org.uk">www.okehamptoncharities.org.uk

Trustees have expressed their sadness at the recent death of Brian Hutchings. Mr Hutchings was a trustee for the charity until he became ill, attending all OUC and OEF meetings. He also served on the grants and property committees, and attended many functions representing OUC. The thoughts of trustees are with Mr Hutchings' wife Muriel and their family.
