CELEBRATIONS are taking place across West Devon next week to mark the 200th anniversary of an historic journey connected with the Battle of Trafalgar. Lifton will be the first stop in Devon for a replica post chaise vehicle recreating the epic journey Devon seaman Lt John Lapenotiere made in 1805 to carry the news of the British victory at Trafalgar. The Arundell Arms in Lifton will be the focus of the village events on Monday where a Lorna Doone replica stage coach will take up position for a static display. Lifton local history group will dress in period costume and distribute flags, a children?s quiz, posies and sweets and sea scouts and cadets will be attending to reflect the naval scene. Church bells will ring as the post chaise vehicle arrives in Lifton, the Devon county copy of the New Trafalgar Dispatch will be presented and Lifton Parish Council chairman Colin Warne will unveil a plaque. Commemorative dispatches will be presented to local pubs and inns on the Trafalgar Way at Portgate, Lewdown, Bridestowe and Sourton. More men from Devon fought alongside Lord Nelson at Trafalgar than from any other county, more than 1,115, and this fact will be recognised in the many events taking place in the county. Okehampton will mark the anniversary on Tuesday when the post chaise vehicle arrives in the town. The town?s mayor Tony Leech described the forthcoming event as a ?historical learning experience.? l Details of events in West Devon are shown below.
