WINTER storms arrived in time for the second round of golf's South West of England Open Winter foursomes competition, sponsored by Ryearch Ltd. But the weather did not deter the competitors, and the course was playing well.
There were heavy defeats for some, with Mike Uglow and Kayliegh Cann from Staddon losing 8 and 6 to the Stover pair of Richard Pascoe and Stuart Kedge. A notable win was notched up by Mark Taylor and Colin Nolan of Yelverton, who beat Cornish County representative Adam Frayne and his partner Andy Nicholson from St Mellion 7 and 5.
Ten-year-old Joe Yorke made his debut in the competition, partnered by young Tom Squire, 18. The combined ages of their opponents, Rob Hylands and Mike Trembeth from Stover, was close to 120, but youth triumphed over experience, with the younger pair winning 3 and 2.
Local professional Tim McSherry, partnered by Laura Eastwood, won their first match against Mike Sandercock and Paddy Ford from Holsworthy, 2 and 1, and China Fleet assistant, Nick Horrocks, partnered by Devon County player Adam Bridgewater had a resounding victory against the Churston pair of Keen and Warwick 8 and 7.
Not all matches were one-sided. Steve Daniels (Wrangaton) and David Lowden (Staddon), fought all the way to the 20th hole, until Adrian Fox, the Exeter professional, and Dennis
Radmore from Teign Valley managed to secure victory.
Kevin Northcote, partnered by his son-in-law Dean Taylor, were taken to the 19th hole to beat the Stover pair of Hughes and Vooght.
The third round will be played on November 16 when Tim McSherry and Laura Eastwood will meet Churston Club secretary Simon Bawden and Christine Clayton, and Staddon professional will meet Exeter professional Tony Fox.
