Devon League
Lewdown v Newton St Cyres
LEWDOWN 1st XI completed their first season in Devon League cricket with another win, at home to Newton St Cyres.
The luck had to change, and skipper Brenden Worth won only his fourth toss of the season and decided to bat first. Lewdown struggled initially against the swinging ball and were 34 for 3 and 119 for 8.
It was left to the more senior members in Tony Geering with 30 and Steve Batstone with 31, being ably assisted by young Jonny Scuttkacker with 27, to post a challenging 178.
For most of the season, Lewdown have bowled and fielded with excellent discipline, and this match was no different.
Ade Edmonds bowled with his usual pace and thoughtful variations, deservedly finishing with the fine figures of 6-21. Keen to finish on a high and give themselves every opportunity of promotion to a new format of division next season, all the Lewdown fielders excelled, throwing themselves around and chasing everything. Newton St Cyres were bundled out for just 97.
Lewdown 19 points beat Newton St Cyres 1 point by 81 runs.
Lewdown have enjoyed their first season in the Devon League and performed admirably. The home form was excellent, losing just one game and drawing one.
In the early part of the season a little too much respect was afforded to unknown opposition, and this may have cost many points in games that were drawn, rather than won. Finishing fourth in the division, the highlight was undoubtedly the home victory and first defeat of the season inflicted on division champions and local rivals Whitchurch Wayfarers.
The Lewdown team applauded each other off the pitch and acknowledged an enjoyable and successful first season in Devon League cricket.
