THE Rotary Club of Okehampton recently held a charity Golf Day at the Ashbury Hotel to raise funds to help young people of the town.

The 51 teams of two descended on Ashbury at lunchtime and enjoyed a meal before setting out to play 18 holes on the Kigbeare course.

Teams were entered from local businesses, individuals and from other Rotary Clubs in the South West.

Play commenced with a ‘shotgun’ start at 2pm so that everyone would finish at more or less the same time.

Refreshments were provided half way round the course by the ladies of the Okehampton Inner Wheel Club.

By 6.30pm the players were back in the club house enjoying the facilities and buffet supper.

The winning pair was the Oke Dream Team A, made up of Richard Murrin and Reg Wonnacott, with an outstanding score of 51. The duo were just two points ahead of Dainton Boys C, who scored 49 points.

Richard also won the ‘Nearest the Pin in Two Shots’ competition on hole 13.

Organised by Okehampton Rotarians Sarah Watts and Russ Thomas, the event was an afternoon enjoyed by all.

Rotary President David Potter thanked everyone for attending and for their contribution to the club’s charitable causes.

The event raised around £3,000 which will go to the Rotary club’s charitable work with youth in the Okehampton area.

The president especially thanked the Ashbury Hotel owners, Simon and Joan Essex, and the hotel and ground staff for providing the facilities and for looking after the competitors and organisers.

He said: ‘Without their generosity, the event could not take place and the Rotary Club is grateful to them.’
