Devon Premier Cup
third round
Okehampton Argyle 1
Chudleigh Athletic 3
OKEHAMPTON started much the stronger against their South Devon League opponents and took a deserved lead after just six minutes when Ian Gill netted his eighth goal of the campaign.
Argyle continued to play the more enterprising football and should have gone further ahead midway through the first period when Adam Mortimer was put clean through, but the visiting keeper easily saved his weak effort.
Okehampton were then rocked after 35 minutes when Chudleigh equalised against the run of play.
Okehampton did not really recover from this set-back and despite having the slope in their favour in the second half, they were never to regain the control of the first period. Two further strikes ended their cup run for this season.
Okehampton Cup
first round
Okehampton Argyle 4
Gunnislake 1
OKEHAMPTON were given an early opportunity to put the disappointment of defeat against Chudleigh behind them when they entertained their Cornish visitors on Sunday.
They got off to a flying start, Adam Mortimer meeting an Adrian Margrie cross with a diving header that flew in off the crossbar.
Again, though, Argyle appeared happy to just cruise through the game and paid the price when Gunnislake scored a deserved equaliser with a shot from the edge of the area.
The Cornishmen could then have taken the lead when a forward was put clean through but Stuart Tolley made a fine save.
Okehampton regained their lead ten minutes before the break, Ian Gill clinically converting a cross from the left.
Argyle came out much the brighter in the second half and effectively killed the game off within five minutes, Nicky Drew timing his run to perfection to beat the offside trap before finishing with an impudent lob.
Chances came and went at both ends but Argyle were always in control and completed the scoring near the end when substitute Neil Agnew converted from the spot after a foul on Mortimer.
This week sees Okehampton return to league action as they travel to Budleigh Salterton. Kick-off 3pm.
