A PUBLIC meeting was held in Mary Tavy on December 1 to discuss the current difficulties being experienced by the Mary Tavy Parish Council.

In November, seven of the nine members of the parish council resigned. By law, the minimum number of councillors for Mary Tavy Parish Council to operate legally is three.

Those who attended the meeting indicated that they supported the borough council using its discretionary power under section 91 Local Government Act 1972 to appoint people temporarily to all or some of the vacancies. The people appointed would act until new councillors are elected in May 2011.

The borough council is now inviting those interested in joining the parish council to confirm by tomorrow (Friday) that they want to be considered.

The borough will decide at its meeting next week (Tuesday December 14) on the appointments and if there are more than seven volunteers, names are likely to be drawn from a hat.
