SCHOOLCHILDREN and residents in West Devon are set to benefit from two areas of new woodlands in the area next year as a result of planting under the South West Forest's Challenge Fund.
Under the fund, landowners may apply for grants to plant new areas of woodland.
A large 79-hectare area of mixed woodland is to be planted at Broadcroft and Risdon near Bratton Clovelly. A section of the wood is adjacent to Boasley Cross Primary School where pupils will be able to become involved in monitoring the growth of the new trees.
A similar educational link will be established with another area of woodland to be planted at Moorhay Farm, near Halwill Junction.
Bob Hands, of the Forestry Commission, said: 'We are delighted at the success of this challenge and very pleased that such high standards have been achieved.
'These new woodlands will contribute towards another milestone in the drive to improve the rural economy in the South West.'
Landowners in West Devon who wish to enter round four of the Challenge Fund competition should register their interest with the Forestry Commission by noon on Monday, December 3.
